Keep On Keepin' On

I know this is a phrase that has possibly been overused, however I feel it certainly applies to the art world and artists especially today. There is currently much negative talk about art sales being down, shows not being successful, the high cost of shipping work to competitions and galleries, etc., but the fact is if you don't have your art anywhere but in your basement there is absolutely no chance that you will gain a new admirer of your art or sell a piece of your work. Even though most of us are quite passionate about the creation of our art there also seems to be a need to share it with others . . . to see the reaction when a piece "speaks" to someone . . . or moves a person enough for them to want to have it in their home long term. That is powerful stuff.
Like any other business there are costs involved. We artists know this. So we either paint (or sculpt or . . .) and continue to show our work when and where we can or we choose to create strictly as a "hobby" and secret our creations away in a basement or closet for no one else to see. Or worse yet . . . we could chose to stop creating all together.
That's not a choice I can make.
